Abstract

The use of ultraviolet radiation (UV) radiation is well established as effective controlling agent for air disinfection, water treatment and surface decontamination property. When it is talked about physical treatment method UV-C irradiation has a positive prospect. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and US Department of Agriculture (USDA) use of UV irradiation is choice of treatment. Consequently, the aim of this study was to determine the effect of ultraviolet energy at a wavelength of 254 nm at various doses and exposure times.1.22 mW/cm2UV-C dose was investigated for its bactericidal and fungicidal effects on the surface of high solid white onion dehydrated products (DHO, KO, MN, GR and SP)with different exposure time (1, 5, 10 and 15 minutes) in terms of the effective log reductions of the population of TVC,YMC,CC and EC. It is observed that 10-15 minutes exposure required for effective control. The highest TVC log reduction of approximately (0.523) at 10 minutes in MN while lowest TVC log reductions 0.121 was observed in DHO at 10 minutes. The highest YM log reduction of approximately (1.198 at 10 minutes) in DHO and lower YM log reductions 0.523 were seen on fraction MN at 15 minutes. The highestCC log reduction of approximately 0.962 at 10 minutes in SP and lower CC log reduction 0.505were seen on KO at 15 minutes. The highest EC log reduction of approximately 1.987 for 10 minutes in DHO and lower EC log reductions 0.860 were seen on GR at 10 minutes. Statistically significant (p<0.001) results were seen in all products except DHO TVC.
