Abstract

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effect of structured exercise programme on systolic and diastolic blood pressure of old citizens. In the present study the subjects were seventy old aged people of Gautam Budh Nagar, Uttar Pradesh. The age of subjects ranged between 60 to 72 years. For the purpose of the present study systolic and diastolic blood pressure was the variable to be experimented. In the present study, pre test, post test randomized group design which consisted of experimental group and control group was used. Blood Pressure was recorded in mmHg for both systolic and diastolic blood pressure with the help of sphygamanometer and stethoscope. The training for experimental group was administered at the community centre of Sec.37 of Gautam Budh Nagar . The experimental group met thrice in a week for a period of twelve weeks (May 1st 2009 to July 30 2009). Each experimental session commenced with one week of general physical conditioning for the experimental group, so that the subjects were ready physically and mentally to take on the specific work for the purpose of the study. Since, the group consisted of senior citizens so the research scholar had taken special care to maintain their motivational level throughout the training programme by introducing recreational games which the older citizens could enjoy. After one week of conditioning the training was administered to the experimental group, thrice a week i.e. Monday, Wednesday and Friday. A weekly schedule was repeated to the next proceeding week and the load was adjusted progressively. A pre test and post test of the subjects was conducted within an interval of 12 weeks exercise programme to check the effects of structured exercise programme on systolic and diastolic blood pressure of old citizens. The tests were conducted in 70 old aged people of Gautam Budh Nagar The data was analyzed by applying ANCOVA.After analyzing data it was concluded that selected exercise programme effect systolic and diastolic blood pressure of old citizens.
