Abstract

The author intends to draw the serious attention of the Plant owners, that due to the establishment of the plants in the vicinity of the rural villages, how the social and economic life of the rural people gets affected. To some it gives a positive nod but to a vast rural population it gives the negative crunch. The purpose of this study has certainly not been to keep this report in the shelves, but to use it to understand the socio-economic situation in the project area namely, 24 villages of 3 tehsils (Dabhara, Kharsia and Raigarh) consisting of 1833 households in the districts of Janjgir-Champa and Raigarh, and to respond to the various needs, opportunities and challenges that it has presented. Clearly, there are quite a few path-breaking initiatives made by the DB Power Limited Company, Government and Development agencies for the socio-economic and cultural development of the residents of this area. However, there are some rugged and old practices of community development, which have not only lost their edge and purpose, but also have become liabilities in terms of sustaining the approach and the infrastructure. This study therefore invites all the readers to make appropriate strategies for the overall development of the people inhabited over the area.
