Abstract | The aim of the study was to formulate and evaluate antimicrobial herbal gel formulation of methanol and chloroform extract of Jatropha curcas (Biodiesel plant) leaves. For this the leaf extracts were prepared by successive solvent extraction using Soxhlet apparatus and screened for antibacterial activity against S. aureus, P. aeroginosa, B. subtilis and antifungal activity against C. albicans and Fusarium solani. The activity was performed by Agar cup method. The methanol and chloroform extract of Jatropha leaves were selected for their better antimicrobial activity against three bacterial strains and two fungal strains. After that individual hydro gel formulation of both the extracts were prepared with different concentration of carbopol (5%) and screened for antimicrobial activity. An optimum concentration was selected and the release was also observed by using disc diffusion cell method. The gel formulations containing maximum release were combined to make a new formulation of both the extracts in different ratios. Furthermore, antimicrobial activity of gel formulations was investigated and concluded that the gel formulation of Methanol extract showed the most significant antimicrobial activity and it was comparable with standard drug. |
