Detection of leakage has become increasingly critical part to the safe and reliable delivery of petroleum product worldwide. The most important part of the petroleum distribution system is the million miles long pipeline system spreaded throughout the world. With passage of time most of the petroleum distribution companies are finding that their pipelines are aging at a faster rate than they can be surveyed and repaired. The reason behind this is that the traditional flame-ionization leak-detection process is hard to keep pace with increasing demand for more frequent, accurate, and efficient surveys and repairs.
