Abstract | Digital Democracy refers to the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) to enhance democratic institutions and democratic processes. It is related to the online activities of governments, elected representatives, political parties and citizens. Vedel (2006) has suggested three popular aspects of digital democracy. First is the aspect of ‘information’. The new technologies have made it quite easier to have access to the information being provided by the public institutions and the government. It also includes the scope for collaboration to organize political activities on new media platforms. Second aspect is related to the enhanced scope of ‘discussion’ and political debates by creating an open and equal digital public space on which people can express their ideas and demands culminating into a pressure group, process of which is way more difficult in the conventional representative democracy. Third aspect suggested by Vedel (2006) is the scope for ‘participation’ of people in the decision-making processes and its range might vary from punctual consultation to direct contribution. |
