Abstract

The present paper tries to analysis the spatial and temporal variations of agricultural productivity regions in Koch Bihar district of West Bengal. The study has been based on secondary data which was collected from the various secondary sources. The major objectives of the study are to measure the spatial and temporal variation in level of agricultural productivity at different block of Koch Bihar district and to find out the relationship between various indicators of agricultural development and crops productivity and finally this paper also focuses on the reasons for the spatial and temporal variations of agricultural productivity in the study area. The study period for this analysis is ten years, from 2001-2002 to 2010-2011. Singh’s (1976) technique of crop yield and concentration indices ranking coefficient has been adopted to delineate the rice productivity regions (Block wise) in Koch Bihar district The high concentration of productivity of cereals have been recorded in the blocks of Haldibari, Mekhliganj, Mathabhanga-I, Sitai, Tufanganj-I and lowest in Mathabhanga-II, Sitalkuchi, Cooch Behar-I, Dinhata-I, Dinhata-II Mathabhanga-I, Cooch Behar-I and Sitalkuchi emerged as high level agriculture developed blocks during 2010-2011. At the period of 2001-2002 maximum agricultural lands of these blocks were unfertile or barren and usually these types of lands were suitable for pluses cultivation which resulted into low level of agricultural development in these blocks during 2001-2002. But the improvement and rise of irrigation facilities and availability of modern techniques, the farmers were like to cultivate cash crops like boro (one type of paddy) which resulted high level of agricultural yield.
