Abstract

Retirement and retirement-related issues have been the topic of scholarly research for over 40 years. Retirement planning activities are influenced by a variety of demographic and psychological variables. It is well known that on average women live longer than men. The questions in today’s post pertain to the size of the gap between male and female life expectancy and the implications of this gap towards retirement planning. Gender related differences show that women worldwide typically live longer than men, traditional gender roles stressing the women’s place within the home with little decision making power, lack of opportunities for education and earning a living may affect their social and economic status. This paper, therefore, aims to examine this important issue by delving into the perceptions of retirement planning from the perspectives of both male and female retirees and outlines the gender differences in retirement planning.
