Abstract

Drainage basin has always been considered as an important areal unit in the history of fluvio-geomorphological research & still gets importance. Drainage basin morphometry helps to analyze drainage basins from various aspects. Drainage basin has its qualitative attributes and quantitative variables. A measure of magnitude of drainage basins is basically deals with the measurement of quantitative variables; those are area, size, and shape of drainage basins. In this paper a conscious attempt has been taken to study the nature and variability of size, shape & area of sub-basins those are included in a large river basin. The Tangana river basin is a sixth order (strahler’s method) drainage basin covering almost 142 sq km area. Almost 80% of this basin area is in Balasore district and rest portion is in Mayurbhanj district. Primarily this analysis has been done irrespective to their basin order. For further detailed analysis order wise change of the sub-basins has been done to represent the change. Another attempt of this paper is to find out if the higher order drainage sub-basins shape gets influenced by the shape of the previous higher order drainage sub- basins or not.
