Government Arts College (Autonomous), Salem-636007 is situated in the heart of Salem city which is lies in the north-west of Tamil Nadu. It caters to the need of people seeking higher education in Salem and neighbouring districts. This oldest institutions of the state was established in 1857 by Sir Alexander Arbuthnot as English medium school. The institution was elevated to second Grade College in 1879. For 52 years from 1885 to 1937, this college functioned under the aegis of Salem municipal administration. It was one of the two likewise institutions all over India during the time. This college offer 17 UG and 16 PG programmes with 10 M.Phil and 8 Ph.D research programmes. Re-accredited by NAAC with B+ level. It was accorded Autonomous status form the academic year 2007.
The literatures of every nation serve as testimonials in preserving their culture heritage. Through the literary works, theories and key concepts literature continues to exist both as an entity and serves as a vital source towards its nation building.
Contextualizing culture through respective literatures culminates into individual experiences, social relations and cumulative power. It possesses the strengths of social sciences and humanities and draw on methods, theories and concepts form culture anthropology, sociology, history, literary and communication studies.
The inevitable relevance, significance and impact of cultural studies both on life and literature have triggered the department of English, GAC (A), Salem-7, to organise an international conference on “Contextualizing culture Heritage in Literature” for the benefit of the research scholars and faculty members of various institutions nationwide. This interaction on the cultural aesthetics amidst the academic sphere would result in an explosion of intellectual contributions.
