Abstract

Rabbit haemorrhagic disease (RHD) is a fatal rapidly spread disease in rabbits. This work aimed to describe the hematological, biochemical and immunological changes in experimentally infected rabbits with rabbit hemorrhagic disease virus (RHDV) and challenged rabbits immunized with inactivated vaccines (Imported and local). The results of this study revealed that RHDV infection in male New Zealand white rabbits induced macrocytic hypochromic anemia, leucopenia and thrombocytopenia with significant prolongation of bleeding time. RHDV exhibited significant increases in serum biochemical parameters related to liver injury, including alanine aminotransferase (ALT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), bilirubin and globulin; they also had reduced levels of total protein and albumin. RHDV also increase the titer of antibody level in infected rabbits. Imported vaccine (IV) completely reduces the clinicopathological alterations of the RHDV in rabbits, unlikely the local vaccine (LV) partially reduces these alterations. In conclusion, our findings demonstrate that IV could protect rabbits against RHDV more than LV which may be needed another booster dose from LV.
