Abstract

Nashik is the leading District in India with regards to agricultural land under Grape cultivation and production. Nashik is popularly known as Wine Capital of India. Grape wine making is gradually picking up in Nashik district since last thirteen years. First winery was established in 1999 at Govardhan, Gangapur Road in Nashik and now numbers of wineries gone upto 38 during last thirteen years. Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) has established two wine parks in Maharashtra, one is at Palus near Miraj and the second is at Vinchur near Nashik. For the last thirty years, grape has acquired dominance in the agricultural economy of the district. Grape share 64.39 percent of area fruits in the Nashik District. The grape cultivation is mostly concentrated in Niphad, Dindori, Chandwad, Nashik, Satana and Sinnar tahasils, where nearly 97 percent grape cultivation area of the district is located. The main aim of the present paper is to study the development of wineries in the Nashik District of Maharashtra. Nashik is one of the major agriculturally and industrially developed district in the North Maharashtra. The Primary and secondary data are used for the present study. The Tahsil has been taken as a unit for analysis of wineries. The study has observed that wineries are mostly concentrated in Niphad & Dindori tahsil where climatic condition is suitable and agricultural development is more than other tahsils of the district. Wineries are not uniformly located in the study area. Unstable price of wine grape and unavailability of local market for wine are the major problem of this industry.
